Taking and Selling Goods
Market actions, hand limit, exchanges and goods sales.
Taking cards
Choose one of three options, then refill the market to five cards from the deck when possible.
- Take one good: take one non-camel card from the market into your hand. Replace it from the deck.
- Exchange goods: take two or more market goods, then return the same number of cards from your hand, camel herd, or both. Refill the market. You cannot return a card of a goods type you just took. A one-for-one exchange is not allowed.
- Take camels: take every camel currently in the market into your face-up herd, then refill the market.
You may take different goods in one exchange. Any camel drawn into your hand during an exchange moves to your herd. Your hand can exceed seven while resolving the action, but must be seven or fewer when your turn ends. Camels do not count toward this limit.
Selling goods
Choose one goods type and discard as many cards of that type as you want. You cannot sell different goods types together. Take one matching goods token for every card sold, from the top of that pile downward; the top token has the highest value.
Diamonds, gold and silver require a sale of at least two cards, even when only one matching token remains. Cloth, spice and leather may be sold one card at a time.
Bonus tokens
A sale of three cards earns a 3-card bonus; four cards earns the 4-card bonus; five or more earns the 5+ bonus. Bonus values are hidden until drawn: respectively 1–3, 4–6, and 8–10 rupees. You still take a bonus token if the corresponding goods pile has fewer tokens than cards sold, provided that bonus pile is available. If that bonus pile is empty, the designer advises selling one fewer card when possible; see the FAQ.
Refilling and market exhaustion
After taking goods or camels, refill vacant market spaces from the draw deck. If the deck runs out, continue playing; the week ends when the market can no longer be restored to five cards or when three goods-token piles are depleted.
Hand limit
At the end of every turn, hold no more than seven goods cards. Camels are kept in a separate herd and never count. You cannot voluntarily discard cards just to meet the limit; choose a legal action that leaves your hand within it. Temporary excess during an exchange is allowed as long as the turn ends at seven or fewer. Designer clarification.
