Tips & Strategy
Teaching order and practical choices grounded in rules teaches and playthroughs.
How to teach
Start with the goal, then demonstrate personal supply versus general stock. Teach one complete turn with the five actions visible. Next, fill a route together and resolve it in order; this is the main rules checkpoint. Finish with ability tracks, end triggers and final scoring. The teach in Game in a Nutshell - Hansa Teutonica (how to play) and Hansa Teutonica - Tutorial and Playthrough - 3-player base game both introduce a turn before the scoring details.
First game
Use the Hanseatic League board without Mission Cards or Emperor’s Favour. The official guide recommends three or four players for a first game. Play one route claim slowly: score each city first, take its marker, then choose at most one reward. Count each player’s actions aloud. A full route needs its own claim action; that distinction is tested in Hansa Teutonica Rules Challenge.
Strategy from playthroughs
Improve one ability, then pivot
The Games in a Nutshell teach and the Gaming Rules! playthrough both show why early ability development matters: more actions, movement or income turns a small personal supply into broader options. Raise Actions to three early when a safe route is available, then develop Book or Bank to avoid having your turn dictated by a shortage. Do not postpone offices indefinitely; they build your network and secure city control.
Make every placement change the route’s price
A route is shared space. One well-placed trader can force a rival to spend a displacement action and its supply cost, while their recovery pieces can create new openings elsewhere. Before blocking, ask whether you can use the resulting congestion to build a better route yourself. The rules challenges emphasize that a filled route is not automatically claimed and that displacement replenishes the displaced player’s presence.
Score the same cities repeatedly
City-control points are checked at every claim, before the route reward. If you own the endpoint cities, a repeat claim can score them again; opponents may contest either city or make the route too expensive. The Gaming Rules! tutorial playthrough demonstrates the full resolution sequence at the table.
Use bonus markers as timing tools
A +3 or +4 marker can create an unusually long turn, but claim markers only when you can still afford to place each replacement at turn end. Delay an action marker until the route is ready, since the route that supplied it cannot also resolve it in that same action. The expansion rules challenge is useful for checking the permanent route effects on East and Britannia.
Plan a network rather than a line
City Keys multiply every office in your largest connected network, including multiple offices in one city. Branching through cities you already control can make each additional office score several points at game end. Avoid counting disconnected offices or counting a city twice when several routes meet there.
Player counts and variants
The Big Box’s standard setup supports 3–5 players. The Britannia rules add a separate optional 2-player neutral-trader variant; follow its complete variant sheet rather than treating two players as ordinary base play. East and Britannia shift the routes and reward priorities, so teach the base map first.
Solo
No publisher solo mode was found in the verified Big Box rules. A community solo sheet exists, but its image-only automation is not fully transcribed here. See Solo.
Videos vs the rulebook
Video examples help show the action economy and route timing. Use the current Pegasus rules for exact values, setup and regional effects; older videos may show an earlier marker set or map printing.
