The first edition of Great Western Trail is for 2 to 4 players and its rulebook has no solo rules.

Players have written several unofficial solo variants and automated opponents for it — solo challenges played for a target score, and automas run by their own card decks. They are fan material, not part of the published game, and this guide does not cover them. Look for them on the Great Western Trail files page. The 2021 second edition added an official solo mode.
