Tips & Strategy

First-game planning, tactics and video references for Aqua Mirabilis.

These are strategic suggestions, not additional rules. The official rulebook controls whenever an explanation differs.

How to teach it

Start with the Sundial. Show how board actions use Action Points, while production returns the Perfumer to the studio and uses the dial’s Production Points and Coach movement. Both production and an exhausted dial move the day marker, so players can see the time pressure before choosing their first action.

Demonstrate a market action with the Perfumer and one moved Worker. Then produce with a method and explain where an unprocessed Flower can be stored. Finish that small loop by showing how the resulting Scents complete a Recipe.

Teach the Preference Matrix with a single perfume pair. Point to the Court row and King column, find their intersection, and count the remaining cells before placing a cube. Then explain which bonuses score for each pair and why a two-complement perfume receives the King match only once.

Save the hidden Final Bonus tiles and detailed Sunday shifts for the end of the teach. Tell the group early that an unflipped City tile supplies Experience, while using its one-off effect flips it and gives up that Experience.

First game

Choose a modest Recipe that matches the Experience you already have. Before visiting the Flower Market, check that your current methods can turn the selected flowers into its base and complement Scents. If a method input can store a leftover Flower, plan to use that slot; other leftovers do not carry through production.

Keep at least one higher-level Recipe in view as a later target, but avoid flipping a City tile just because its benefit is available. First check whether losing its Experience would block the Recipes you still want to take.

Use early presentations to learn the matrix rather than chasing every bonus at once. A full intersection provides no new cube and no score for that scent pair, so compare available pairs before committing a perfume.

The six first-game checks below cover errors that are easy to make while learning the action loop. Keep the rules pages open for costs and exact timing.

Plan the Sundial

Each board action spends Action Points, but a production turn resets the dial and advances the day. Before producing, check whether a remaining low-cost action can improve the next production: a needed flower, an Apprenticeship tile or a City visit may be worth using the time for.

Do not delay production just to spend every point if the method inputs are already ready or the day track is nearing its final Sunday. The action that exhausts the dial resolves before the Sunday procedure, so finish it before moving the shared markers.

The action-type restriction also applies when an Originality token buys an extra turn. Plan a different action type for that extra turn instead of assuming the token lets you repeat the previous space.

The Italian Aqua Mirabilis playthrough by ariodb shows the sequence of market, production and perfume decisions over play. The Spanish KludiK tutorial demonstrates the action and production cycle.

Build toward a Recipe

Before collecting, check a Recipe’s Experience level, base scent and complementary slots. Make a small shopping plan: which Flowers can your methods process, which ones can be stored, and how many Production Points does that method require?

Prefer ingredients that support more than one future perfume when your active methods allow it. A basket that cannot be processed or stored may be wasted at the end of production, even if it looked useful at the market.

The Kaeru Games tutorial and Zacatrus introduction both explain how flowers become perfumes. Use their demonstrations to visualize the sequence, then verify a particular method’s exact input and output in Production and travel.

Protect Experience and choose City effects

An unflipped City tile contributes Experience. Its one-off ability can help immediately, but flipping it removes that contribution; do it only after checking the Recipes you still plan to take. The City tile remains useful for its printed end-game value, so compare the immediate effect with the lost Recipe access.

Travel also has an opportunity cost: the selected city requires its printed Action Points and a matching Letter of Reference level. A Coach that reaches a city during production can take any tile from that city pile, then the remaining tiles are shuffled into a new face-up pile; the Perfumer action takes only the top tile. When you need a particular effect, weigh the Coach’s selection against the production legs and Letter requirement.

The rules explanation and analysis by Les Jeux de Chaps, Aqua Mirabilis : Explication et analyse du jeu, discusses the game’s linked planning decisions. Treat its strategic comments as advice; the rulebook settles tile timing and Experience.

Present with a plan

Before choosing a perfume, inspect every base-and-complement intersection it will use. A two-complement perfume uses two intersections, but if one is full that pair cannot claim a cube or score. The King bonus applies only to the first pair, so do not count it twice.

Reference level affects Court-preference points, while Dame favours can change the value of a presentation. Dame B increases the King match and Dame D rewards each cube placement; Dame C can permit a second perfume in one presentation action. Check a favour’s exact text before relying on it.

If a matrix Originality token is available, include its value in the decision. A token claimed now can be spent for an extra turn or kept for its end-game point, so compare those uses against the value of the presentation.

Use gifts and influence deliberately

An eligible gift can add Influence and reveal a Dame’s hidden Final Bonus tile. With eight Influence tokens per player and a limit of two retained favours, gifts have competing uses. Check whether a gift changes who controls the Dame, protects a majority, or opens a scoring condition you can still reach.

Do not assume that placing one token secures a favour for the rest of the game. Another gift can change the majority, and a tie leaves control with nobody. Track your opponents’ Influence before spending a scarce Scent, Originality token or perfume on a gift.

The Dice Tower review Aqua Mirabilis Review - with Tom Vasel by The Dice Tower includes a rules overview before its final judgement. Use the official manual for exact gift costs and timing.

First-game checks

Player counts

The game uses a different main-board face for two players; its matrix intersections have two cells rather than four. That changes how quickly scent-pair spaces can fill, so check the remaining cells before planning a presentation.

In a three-player game the day track skips the marked invalid days. The four-player game uses the multiplayer board face and the regular day sequence. Use the player-count row in Setup for the exact shared-board arrangement.

The first few decisions still follow the same loop at every count: collect usable Flowers, produce Scents, complete a Recipe, and choose a matrix pair that still has space. Opponents’ timing determines how quickly preferred intersections become unavailable.

Solo

Aqua Mirabilis has no official solo mode in the publisher’s rulebook or component list. This guide does not add an unofficial solitaire opponent or change the multiplayer rules for solo play.

Videos and the rulebook

The Spanish tutorials by KludiK, Kaeru Games and Zacatrus are useful visual introductions, while ariodb provides an Italian playthrough. The French analysis by Les Jeux de Chaps and The Dice Tower overview add strategic and game-structure context.

The videos are not a substitute for exact costs, city requirements, Sunday timing or scoring. For those, use Actions, Production and Perfumes, Game End and Scoring and the publisher’s English rules. The videos page groups verified setup and gameplay videos by language.
