Marco Polo II: The Caravans
Move a loaded caravan along known roads to improve, double or sell Goods.
Short tag: [Caravans]
What it adds
The mini expansion includes four Character tiles, five caravans (one neutral), ten Route tiles and a Caravans scoring board. The route tiles connect city shields; the scoring board sets sale values.
Setup changes
Shuffle the four characters into the base Character supply and use the normal player-plus-one selection. Give each player their colored Caravan; set out the neutral one for Piedro Tartarino. Place the scoring board and the ten Route tiles faceup beside the game board.
New and changed rules
Place and load a Caravan
As a Bonus Action, if your figure is in a city (not an oasis), take a face-up Route tile matching that city’s shield. Put your Caravan in the city with the other shield on the tile, then load it with one or two Goods from your supply. It cannot enter play empty, and you cannot start a second route if no matching tile remains.
Move and complete the route
After resolving a Books action, move your Caravan one space with Book I, up to two with Book II, or up to three with Book III. Move as a figure would, except the Caravan never places a Trading Post or triggers an Outpost bonus, and its movement has no
Coin or Good cost. A water route still requires its matching Guild Seal.
After an action finishes, if your figure and Caravan share a location, you may complete the route. For each carried Good, choose separately: return it and take another of the same type; improve
Pepper to
Silk or
Silk to
Gold (
Gold cannot improve); or sell it for the value on the scoring board. Then return the route tile facedown and the Caravan beside your player board. At the beginning of each round, flip discarded Route tiles faceup again.
At game end, sell any Goods left on your Caravan for half the normal route-sale value:
Gold is worth three points,
Silk two and
Pepper one.
Expansion characters
- Vidal Badoer: Contracts cost no Goods or
Camels but award no points; at end-game tally, count four completed Contracts. When gaining Contracts from the board action, take only one. Once per round, sell a set for five points. - Piedro Tartarino: Start with the neutral Caravan and may keep two Caravans/routes in play. Move both after a Books action; a completed route also grants three points and one
Jade. - Donata Badoer: Take three remaining figures of different player colors. Use them as six-value workers on legal action spaces; each used figure is removed. After an action with an occupied space, gain two
Camels, but not when using these figures. - Tebaldo Visconti da Piacenza: Move the Caravan up to two extra locations, ignore the
Coin cost when improving Guild Seals, and add one shield to final scoring.
Scoring changes
The Caravan does not change base scoring. It converts carried Goods into route points/resources; leftover Goods on it score half the sale value at the end. See Tips & Strategy.
