Winter

The fourth round of each year: no supply path, six phases, then food and heating.

Winter cards

Each year ends with a winter round. The winter card for that year shows how much Food food and heating wood each player must hand in. Every card has two halves; only the half left visible at setup counts.

The supply path is not used in winter, so gather food and wood in fall. Only your Mill worker mill worker and your mill-worker huts can work.

Winter bonus

At the start of winter, each player takes 1 wood of their choice from the supply and puts it on their woodpile. Hardwood Hardwood is allowed: in a 2-player game this can be the only way to get some.

Winter phases

Play these six phases in forest clearing order:

  1. Winter woodcutting
  2. Sledge transport
  3. Winter sawing
  4. Winter tasks
  5. Feeding
  6. Heating

There is no selling or drying in winter, and no log driving: the river is frozen.

Winter woodcutting

Put your mill worker on your woodpile and take 2 Firewood firewood from the supply to it. Each extra cutting worker (a mill-worker hut) adds 1 more firewood.

Sledge transport

The only way to move wood in winter. Put your mill worker on the woodpile and return a Sledge sledge: move 2 wood to the sawmill, plus 1 more for each Food food you return (up to 3 food).

Winter sawing

As in Sawing: one worker and one Saw saw per disk. Your mill worker can do only one of cutting, carrying or sawing, so plan which one you need.

Winter tasks

Feeding

Hand in the food the winter card asks for. For each piece you lack, pay $3. Leftover food goes back to the supply.

Heating

Hand in the milled wood the winter card asks for, usually milled firewood from your firewood storage. Milled softwood and hardwood also count, but are worth more sold. For each piece you lack, pay $3. Leftover heating wood stays for next winter.

Shortfalls

If you can’t pay for missing food or heating:

  1. Take a loan, or both.
  2. If that is still not enough, sell wood from your mill at normal prices, even from the sawing area and firewood storage, until you can pay and have some money left for spring.

After winter

After the first winter, spring of year 2 starts. The second winter uses the second winter card. After the second winter comes the final sale.
