Does a discount apply only to my next purchase?
No. It remains active for later purchases from the matching location. It does not discount the character that grants it, and a price cannot go below zero.

Must I place my first card immediately?
Yes. Place it and resolve its ability right away. Later cards determine its eventual position in the three-by-three grid; that flexibility does not delay its immediate effect.
