Tips & Strategy
Teaching Acquire, a first game, cash flow, when to found, merge, sell or trade, player counts, and the best videos.
Advice, not rules: the rulebook wins wherever a video or tip disagrees.
How to teach
Win condition first (most money), then the three-step turn, then one merger worked out on the info card. Use open stock, open money and Tycoon Mode the first time.
Host game
Before the first purchase, ask the player how much cash they will retain and which active chain they want to invest in. Three shares is a maximum, not a requirement.
Rehearse founding and buying
Place a tile beside an independent tile to found an available chain. Take its founder’s share, then demonstrate the normal purchase step: the free founder’s share is separate from the limit of three purchased shares. Read the new chain’s actual size and price on the info card before paying. Finish by drawing a replacement tile.
Later, when discarding tiles that would join safe chains, show the timing once: if a replacement is also permanently unplayable, wait until your next turn to discard it. A tile that would create an eighth chain is temporarily blocked, not a permanently unplayable tile to exchange immediately.
Your first game
- Keep cash. Spending everything early on a big or isolated chain leaves you unable to buy when the merger you want comes up.
- Aim for first or second, not third, in a chain: in Classic Mode third pays nothing, and in Tycoon it pays little.
- Watch the small chains. They get acquired soonest, and their bonuses come quickly.
- Mind the edges. A chain in a corner or far from others merges late; one between other chains is likely to be acquired soon.
Strategy
- Founding: the free share gives you a head start; if others push in, the founder can often hold the lead. Re-founding a chain whose old stock others kept mostly helps them.
- Merging: merge when you need cash now, when you’d lose a majority by waiting, or to stop a chain growing safe before you are paid. Hold the tile that would merge a chain you lead until the moment suits you.
- Acquired stock: sell for cash you need now; keep it if you hold tiles that could found that chain again; trade 2 for 1 to take control of the survivor.
- End game: once a chain is safe it pays only at the end — buy into the big safe chains, and time the call so you make the last purchase.
Player counts
- 2: the bank’s random holding makes bonuses less predictable; some prefer Lloyd’s two-player rules, where each player runs two hands.
- 3–4: the usual sweet spot; 4 balances calculation and downtime.
- 5–6: fewer turns each and money runs short; Tycoon Mode’s extra bonus helps.
Editions
Older and newer boxes differ: Hasbro’s 2016 edition uses 100 tiles on a 10 × 10 board, calls the chains corporations (Rove, Bolt, Fleet, Echo, Nestor, Etch, Spark), makes a chain safe at 10 tiles and ends at 38, and always pays three bonuses. The 1999 and 2008 boxes match the 2023 numbers (108 tiles, safe at 11, end at 41) and pay two. Use the numbers printed on your own info card.
