Tips & Strategy
Tactical advice for balancing slaughter margins, construction, and market control.
How to teach it
Teach the market math first: meat value minus livestock price gives the profit margin. Then explain that every player can slaughter each animal type once each year, so timing matters. Finish with the connected-building rule and the competition for workers.
Your first game
- Keep enough cash to pay for a negative slaughter margin or a planned build.
- Watch the Year card before placing workers; it can change the value of later actions.
- Buildings are a long-term engine, but the footprint cost and connection requirement can be tight.
- A branch is valuable when the rail network serves its market; check the connections before paying.
- Reducing Union Spirit can prevent future Low Morale penalties, but those workers could have earned money or savings.
Host game
Rehearse Yellow’s nineteen-minus-fifteen cattle margin before the first work phase. Pay only the four-dollar difference from the bank; this is not a purchase followed by a separate sale. On the first three turns, check livestock remains in the selected space and that the player has not already slaughtered that type this year. A negative margin is a payment by the player rather than a payout.
