Tips & Strategy
A practical teaching order and first-game advice for the combined Anniversary Edition.
How to teach it
Teach the core loop before the modules: learn a Trick, get its components, prepare it, put its marker on a Performance card, then perform that card. Next explain how each Trick owner collects their own yield while the Magician who performs the show gets the links and card bonuses. Finish with the simultaneous Assignment phase, one-weekday Theater restriction and wages.
For the first session, use the core rulebook’s recommended no-Dark-Alley option. Add the Dark Alley once players are comfortable, then add one compatible expansion at a time. Dawn of Technology and Arcane Arts require the Dark Alley; Magician Powers is not recommended with Dawn of Technology.
Your first game
- Reserve enough Coins for wages before planning expensive buys. Each non-idle Specialist costs 2 Coins and each non-idle Apprentice costs 1 at turn end.
- Use the dice before choosing the team’s assignments: available trick categories, hires and Bank amounts can all change the week’s plan.
- Prepare tricks early enough to place them on future Performance cards. A show pays trick owners as well as its performer, so coordinate which card your Magician can perform.
- Favor the shortest explanation first: exclude the Dark Alley and expansion modules, but remember that this variant ends after turn five and has different final scoring.
Videos versus the rulebook
The current Anniversary Edition overview by Action Andy Compact Rules covers the included expansion bundle. Before You Play teaches and plays with Dahlgaard’s Academy and Arcane Arts. Older base-game videos can help with the core loop but do not include all Anniversary content. Treat video wording as teaching advice; the applicable rulebook wins.
